The primary purpose of the Research Assistant II position is to perform general laboratory duties, to assist with blood and tissue processing and to carry out specific experiments designed to improve the molecular understanding of pediatric cancers.


Animal Work

Perform a variety of in vivo animal studies involving invasive surgical techniques, including injections (intraperitoneal, intravenous), oral gavage, small surgery, collection of tissues on necropsy. Maintain colonies of animals as needed for experiments.

General Lab Maintenance

Assume responsibility for general laboratory maintenance by maintaining procedures and protocols that ensure the quality and integrity of procedures performed, monitoring work flow as it pertains to the need for supplies, equipment maintenance and preparation of stock solutions, keeping ample stock of supplies on hand and following up on orders to ensure organization and accessibility of all reagents. Maintain an excellent working knowledge of all basic laboratory equipment and apparatus. Read scientific literature to keep current with new research techniques and learn or develop new techniques by communicating with other researchers and biotechnology companies.

Laboratory Work

Conduct all tissue based experiments including immunohistochemistry analysis, microscopy analysis, FISH, and ISH. Harvest, procure and preserve, in paraffin or tissue blocks, fresh biological specimens collected from surgical procedures to conduct basic molecular biological techniques. Maintain data security and integrity of procured tissue to include registration of procured tissue in the institutional Tissue Bank. Reconcile and organize data and tissues for timely submission or reports on human specimens procured. Communicate results or any potential problems to the primary investigator(s). Perform some mouse experiments. Tissue based experiments to include immunohistochemistry analysis, microscopy analysis, FISH and ISH, RT-PCR, Western blotting, RNA extraction, transfection.


Minimum: $29,200 – Midpoint: $36,500 – Maximum: $43,800


Required: Bachelor’s degree with major course work in one of the basic sciences.

Preferred: Master’s degree with major course work in one of the basic sciences.


Required: Two years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with preferred degree.
